Conegliano
Conegliano is called “the Pearl of the Veneto“. It is famous for being the seat of the first Enological School in Italy, founded in 1876 and today one of the ten public high schools in Italy where the art of winemaking is studied. It is also the birthplace of the outstanding Renaissance painter Giambattista Cima.
The historic center of the town has medieval origins. It was built mainly on via XX Settembre, the ancient Contrada Grande, which widens at the base of the hill. There is a Castle on the summit, which can be accessed through suggestive routes, walking along the ancient walls. Inside you can find the Civic Museum, which offers a journey through the history of the city and a splendid panoramic terrace on the top floor.
Do not miss the Duomo of the town, a 14th century building in the historic center. Its façade is frescoed by Pozzoserrato, and it is one of the most important wall frescoes in the world present in the Veneto region. Inside the Cathedral you can find the famous Altarpiece by Cima da Conegliano, his only painting still present in the town.
The Sala dei Battuti e del Capitolo, connected to the Cathedral, is one of the most interesting monuments of the town. It is adorned with splendid frescoes by Francesco da Milano, Jacopo Pozzoserrato and a part of frescoes attributed to Girolamo da Treviso. The Casa di Giovanni Battista Cima is also worth visiting. This building, located in the homonymous street behind the Duomo, is now used as a museum.
Palazzo Sarcinelli, also located in the splendid Contrada Grande, hosts various art exhibitions of local and international artists all year round.
